Management of a company network: What every business owner should know

Published 11 April 2026 | Reading time: 6 minutes

The company network is like the building's distribution system, as long as it works, no one thinks about it. But once it fails, the entire business grinds to a halt. The internet goes down, printers stop printing, shared folders become inaccessible and employees cannot work.

You don't need to be a network engineer to understand the basics. This article explains what a corporate network consists of, why quality matters and what your network should meet.

What a company network consists of

Every corporate network comprises several basic elements. Let us review them in clear terms:

Router: the gateway between your company network and the internet. It determines where data is sent and fundamentally protects the network from external threats. A business should have a quality enterprise router, not a basic home box from an internet provider.

Switch: a device that connects computers, printers and other equipment via cables. Think of it as a smarter socket. It sends data directly to where it belongs, not to everyone at once.

Wi-Fi access point, provides wireless connectivity. For the company, it is important that Wi-Fi covers the entire office reliably and securely, not just "sort of works".

Firewall: a security barrier that monitors what enters and leaves the network. It can be part of the router or a separate device.

Wiring, physical connection between devices. High-quality structured cabling (Cat6 and above) is the foundation of a reliable network. It does not pay to save on cabling.

Why network quality matters

A slow or unreliable network costs a company money. Specifically:

  • Loss of productivity, every employee waiting for a file to load or restarting their computer due to a network outage is not working. For a company with 10 people, this amounts to thousands of Kč per day.
  • Safety risks: a poorly secured network is an open door for hackers. Ransomware, data theft, breaches. It all starts with a weak network.
  • Unreliable video calls, at a time when many meetings are held online, a high-quality network is essential for professional communication.
  • Issues with Cloud Applications: if a company uses Microsoft 365, cloud accounting software or CRM, it depends on a stable network.

Network segmentation: Why not everything belongs on a single cable

Segmentation means dividing the network into separate sections. It is one of the most important security measures that many small companies ignore.

We recommend separating at least:

  • Company network: employees' computers, servers, printers
  • Hostovská Wi-Fi: for visitors and employees' personal devices, separated from the corporate network
  • IoT devices, cameras, sensors, smart appliances, these devices often have weak security and should not have access to company data.

Segmentation ensures that if a compromised device on the guest Wi-Fi attempts to spread a virus, it will not reach your company computers and data.

Wi-Fi in the business: How to do it right

Corporate Wi-Fi differs from home Wi-Fi. Here are the key points:

  • Corporate access points, domestic routers are insufficient. Professional access points (UniFi, Aruba, MikroTik) handle dozens of devices simultaneously without interruption.
  • Correct positioning: a single access point is insufficient for an entire office. Coverage must be planned, ideally with signal measurement.
  • WPA3/WPA2-Enterprise security, each employee logs in with their own name and password. When they leave, you deactivate their account without changing the passwords for everyone else.
  • Separate guest network: for visits with their own password and restricted access.

Monitoring: Know about a problem before your staff do.

Professional network management includes monitoring, continuous tracking of the status of all network elements. Monitoring can:

  • Alert when a switch or access point stops working
  • Detect unusual operation that may indicate an attack or a compromised device.
  • Monitor internet line utilisation and identify bottlenecks
  • Record outages and their duration for reliability analysis

Thanks to monitoring, we (as managers) become aware of the issue before your employees notice it. We can then resolve it before it starts affecting work.

How much does a quality corporate network cost?

Estimated budget for an office with 10-20 computers:

Item Indicative price
Corporate router/firewall5 000-15 000 Kč
Managed switch (24 ports)3 000-8 000 Kč
Wi-Fi access point (2-3 pcs)6 000-15 000 Kč
Structured cabling500-1 500 Kč per connection
Configuration and settings5 000-15 000 Kč

A quality network infrastructure will last without problems for 7-10 years. Spread over months, this amounts to a fraction of the cost per employee.

How to tell if your network needs attention

  • Wi-Fi drops out or is weak in certain rooms
  • The internet is slow, even though your provider supplies sufficient speed.
  • The printer occasionally "disappears" from the network.
  • Video calls stutter or drop out.
  • You do not have a separate guest Wi-Fi network.
  • No one knows the password for managing the router or switch.

If you recognise yourself in one or more of these points, it is time to have the system checked by a professional. As IT manager in Prague 1 We will gladly do this for you.
