Monitoring of IT infrastructure: Detect issues before users do.

Published 11 April 2026 | Reading time: 6 minutes

How do you usually find out about an IT issue? An employee calls to say their internet isn't working. A client complains that your e-shop is unavailable. By then, the problem has already lasted minutes, sometimes hours. IT monitoring reverses this scenario. You learn about the issue before anyone notices it.

Proactive versus reactive approach

Most small companies deal with IT reactively: something breaks, they call a technician, and he fixes it. The problem is that every outage costs money, employees cannot work, customers cannot be reached, orders are lost.

A proactive approach means continuously monitoring infrastructure and resolving issues before they cause an outage. Is the server disk 90% full? You receive an alert and resolve it before space runs out and the server stops working. Did a backup fail to complete? You know first thing in the morning, not only when you need the data.

What to Monitor

Availability of equipment and services

Basic monitoring level, are your servers, switches, access points and other devices online? Is the email server functioning? Does the website respond? Monitoring checks each device at regular intervals (typically every 1-5 minutes) and immediately alerts you if anything stops responding.

Cooling and heating capacity

Deposits

Monitoring also includes checking that backups are functioning correctly. How many companies discover their backups are not working only when they desperately need them? Monitoring immediately detects backup failure and alerts the building's owners' association.

Safety incidents

Hardware health check

Modern monitoring tools track disk health (S.M.A.R.T. Data), component temperatures and UPS status. A faulty disk can be replaced in a planned manner during working hours, avoiding weekend panic.

How alerts work

Monitoring without alerts is just a pretty graph. The key is to set up alerts correctly:

Poorly configured alerts: either too sensitive (triggering for every minor issue) or too tolerant (triggering only when it is already too late), are worse than having none at all. Properly tuning alerts is an art that comes with experience.

Tools for monitoring

For small businesses there are many tools available, from simple to comprehensive:

The choice of tools depends on the size of the infrastructure and the budget. For a company with 10 computers and one server, a simple solution is sufficient. For more complex environments, a more robust platform is required.

What monitoring costs and what it saves

Implementing monitoring typically involves a one-off setup cost (2 000-10 000 Kč) plus monthly management fees (included in the flat-rate IT management). On the other hand, monitoring prevents outages that could cost tens to hundreds of thousands of crowns in lost productivity.

One practical example: monitoring detected a full disk on the server on Friday evening. The administrator freed up space remotely within 10 minutes. Without monitoring, this would not have been discovered until Monday morning, when the server would be down and 15 people unable to work.

Summary

IT monitoring is the foundation of professional infrastructure management. It enables problems to be prevented rather than reacted to, allows for capacity planning and provides an overview of the status of all systems. For a company of any size, it is one of the most effective investments in IT stability.
