Computer repair in Prague: 7 most common faults and how we fix them

Published 11 April 2026 | Reading time: 6 minutes

Over the years of working in IT service, we have repaired thousands of computers. And do you know what is interesting? Most faults repeat themselves. We keep resolving the same seven problems that plague business computers in Prague. In this article, we will show you what they are, what causes them and how we repair them.

Whether you have one computer or fifty in your office, this overview will help you identify problems before they become a serious obstacle to work.

1. Slow start-up and reduced operating speed

The most common complaint of all. A computer that used to start in 20 seconds suddenly takes three minutes to boot up. Programs respond with a delay, and switching between windows feels like it takes forever.

Causes: Most often, it is an old hard disk drive (HDD) that cannot keep up. Other causes include a nearly full disk (less than 10% free space), too many programs launching at startup, or insufficient RAM.

How we handle this: Replacing an HDD with an SSD is unequivocally the most effective solution. The computer speeds up dramatically: often fivefold. We supplement this by optimising startup programs and, if necessary, adding RAM. The entire repair usually takes 1-2 hours, including data transfer.

2. Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)

A blue screen with an error code is every user's nightmare. The computer suddenly restarts and displays a blue screen with technical information.

Causes: A blue screen can indicate faulty RAM, a damaged controller, processor overheating, a failing hard drive or, in the worst case, a motherboard fault.

How we handle this: First, we analyse the error code and memory dumps. This precisely identifies which component or driver is causing the problem. We then carry out a targeted repair, replacing faulty RAM, updating the driver, or cleaning overheating components.

3. Overheating and noisy fans

The computer is unusually loud, hot to the touch or switches off by itself. This typically worsens in summer or in offices without air conditioning.

Causes: Dust inside the computer, dried thermal paste between the processor and the cooler, a faulty fan or insufficient airflow (the computer is tucked into an enclosed space).

How we handle this: Complete cleaning of the interior with compressed air, replacement of thermal paste and inspection of all fans. If a fan is faulty, we will replace it. We also advise on computer placement to ensure adequate airflow.

4. Infection by a virus or malware

The computer is behaving strangely, pop-up ads appear, the browser redirects to unknown websites, or the system is significantly slower without an obvious cause. In worse cases, files are encrypted and a ransom demand appears on the screen (ransomware).

Causes: Opening an infected email attachment, downloading software from an untrusted source, visiting a compromised website or missing security updates.

How we handle this: We will disconnect the computer from the network to prevent spread. We will perform a deep analysis using specialised tools. We will remove all malicious software and verify that the system is clean. In case of ransomware, we will restore data from backup (if available). Subsequently, we will set up proper protection to prevent recurrence.

5. Hard Drive Failure

The computer is extremely slow, emitting clicking or squeaking noises; files cannot be opened or disappear. Worst-case scenario: the computer fails to start at all.

Causes: Mechanical wear (in classic HDD drives), manufacturing defects, overheating, sudden power outages or simply age, hard drives have a limited lifespan.

How we handle this: If the drive still functions partially, data recovery is the priority. We use specialised tools to restore files from damaged drives. The drive is then replaced with a reliable SSD, which has no moving parts and is significantly more durable. Data is transferred and the system restored.

6. Problems with operational memory (RAM)

The computer restarts randomly, programs crash without warning, and the system freezes when working with larger files. Occasionally, a blue screen appears with various error codes.

Causes: Faulty memory module, incompatible memory (after upgrade), oxidised contacts or a loose module in the slot.

How we handle this: We will run memory diagnostics (memtest86) to precisely identify the faulty module. We will replace it with a compatible substitute. In some cases, removing the memory modules, cleaning the contacts and reseating them is sufficient. A stability test after repair is standard procedure.

7. Power supply fault

The computer does not turn on at all, or it turns on and immediately shuts off. Sudden power failures occur during operation. Occasionally, a burning smell is noticeable.

Causes: Voltage surges in the grid, storms, wear and tear of components (capacitors) inside the power supply, overload (power supply too weak for the given components), or simply age.

How we handle this: We will test the power supply with a specialised tester. If it is faulty, we will replace it with a high-quality unit that has sufficient performance reserve. We will also check whether voltage surges have damaged other components. We recommend connecting via surge protection or a UPS.

How to prevent faults

Most problems can be avoided with regular maintenance. We recommend:

  • Regular cleaning of the computer from dust (at least once a year)
  • Ongoing updates to the system and antivirus software
  • Regular data backup (see our guide to advance payments)
  • Connection via surge protection
  • Do not install software from unverified sources.
  • Have your air conditioner regularly checked by a technician.

Why have repairs carried out by a professional

When your car breaks down, you take it to a service centre. It should be the same with computers. Attempting a DIY repair often leads to further problems, lost data, damaged components or unnecessarily long downtime.

As IT service in Prague 1 We deal with these faults daily. We have diagnostic tools, spare parts in stock and experience, which means we can complete most repairs within hours, not days.
